How to use Unbinge
After installation, follow these steps to get the best experience.
Pin the extension to your toolbar
Click the puzzle piece 🧩 icon in your browser toolbar → find Unbinge → click the pin icon. This keeps it one click away.
Choose your age profile
A setup page opens automatically on first install. Pick the profile that fits:
- Kids (≤8) — most restrictive, safest content only
- Teens (9-14) — wider range of educational topics
- Adult / Parent — full access to the entire approved whitelist
Kids and Teens must set a parent PIN during this step. Switching to Adult later, turning off Education Mode, or approving channels locally requires that PIN.
Turn on Education Mode
Click the Unbinge icon in your toolbar → flip the Education mode toggle ON. Watch pages, channel pages, embeds (including youtube-nocookie players on other sites), and live videos are allowed only for approved channels. On Kids and Teens, Home, Search, Shorts, history, playlists, and similar browse pages are blocked too. Adult/Parent can still open Home and Search; playing a video is still whitelist-checked. Subscriptions stays available on every profile — clicking a video is still checked.
Sync the whitelist
Tap Sync whitelist in the popup to pull the latest approved channels. Changing the age profile also refreshes the list for that profile (this does not use the 6-hour manual cooldown). A weekly background sync is a backup, not the only refresh path. Manual sync from the button has a 6-hour cooldown.
Add a channel you trust
Found an educational channel that's not on the list? Paste its YouTube link in the "Add channel" field inside the popup — it's approved locally on your device instantly, and automatically submitted for global review. If you don't have the extension, use the global review page. If our team approves it, it gets a 🔵 blue badge visible to all users.
Customise distraction settings
Open Distraction Settings in the popup to fine-tune what gets hidden on YouTube:
- Comments, recommendations, Shorts, end-screen cards
- Trending, explore, homepage feed
- Autoplay, annotations, notifications
Every toggle is independent — turn off only what bothers you.
Tips & tricks
What the blue badge means
A 🔵 badge on a channel means it's been manually verified by our team as safe and educational.
Dark & light mode
Tap the ☀️/🌙 toggle in the top-right of the popup to switch themes at any time.
Parent profile tip
Set your child's browser to the Kids or Teens profile (with a parent PIN) and keep the Adult profile for your own browser.
Whitelist updates
New channels are added regularly. Auto-sync happens weekly, or tap "Sync whitelist" to get updates immediately.
