YouTube for Studying, Without the Next-Up Loop

Lectures, worked examples, and language clips live on YouTube. So do suggested videos, Shorts, and autoplay. Unbinge is a free Chrome and Edge extension that lets students keep the lesson and drop the feed — with a channel whitelist when they want a hard stop, or UI filters when they only need a quieter player.

The problem

“Just one video” often fails because the sidebar, end screen, and Shorts shelf are designed to start the next one. A study session needs the opposite: open a known channel or a bookmarked watch URL, finish the video, close the tab. Blocking ads does not remove recommendations.

A study setup that exists today

  • Education Mode — only globally approved channels plus channels you add locally will play. Other watch, channel, embed, and live URLs hit a blocked screen.
  • Adult/Parent or Teens profile — Adult can still open Home and Search (playing a video is still checked). Teens block Home and Search so the browse pages never list random titles; a parent PIN applies on Teens. Pick the profile that matches who uses the computer.
  • Distraction filters — hide Shorts, recommendations, comments, end screens, trending, the homepage feed, and autoplay independently. Useful on allowed channels so the player stays quiet.

Unbinge does not grade your homework, download videos, or replace a school LMS. Classroom sites that embed youtube-nocookie players are still checked when Education Mode is on.

How to use it for a study session

  1. Install and pick a profile

Steps are on the install page. Use Adult on your own browser if you need Home and Search. Use Teens if a parent should lock settings.

  2. Turn on Education Mode

Sync the whitelist. Add a course channel locally if it is not on the global list yet — or submit it for review.

  3. Tune the player

Keep Hide Shorts and recommendations on if those are what derail you. Details: YouTube without Shorts and the distraction blocker guide.

Who it’s for

Secondary and university students, self-learners, and teachers pointing a class at a few channels. Younger children should use the Kids profile instead. If you want the broader “calm learning YouTube” story, start at distraction-free YouTube.
